Edwardian Carnelian Signet Ring
Carnelian, a fiery orange-to-red variety of chalcedony, holds one of the longest and most consistently documented folkloric associations in the history of gemstones. From the tombs of Egyptian pharaohs to the battlefields of ancient Rome, this stone has been universally revered for millennia as an active agent of courage, protection, vitality, and leadership.
The ancient Egyptians nicknamed carnelian "the Sunset Stone" due to its blazing, translucent hues. They associated its fiery color with the sun god, Re, and the solar cult. While deep red carnelians were considered masculine status symbols worn by royal architects to denote rank, lighter orange stones represented radiant feminine energy.
Let this ring make you shine in the sun. The stone is a lovely hue with a lighter area which shows that the stone is a natural earth mined stone.
The ring is an antique Edwardian ring based on the designs of the shoulders of the ring. The ring is made out of 9ct gold. The ring is stamped for metal purity and manufacturer's hallmark on the inside of the shank. It is stamped 9ct R&S.
The ring is believed to be made by Rotherham & Sons (Coventry and London): A famous 19th- and 20th-century English watch and clockmaker whose "R&S" cameo case-maker's marks are often found inside gold pocket watch and wristwatch cases.
The stone measures 12.5mm x 10mm and is solidly set in a bezel that goes all the way around the stone. The ring is very comfortable to wear and sits low on the finger.
