Spinel is one of the three birthstones of August together with bright green, Peridot, and the oldest birthstone for August, Sardonyx. Spinel is one of the rare gemstones which come in a wealth of colors, from intense red to bluish-green.

The legend of this stone is often marred in mistaken identity. This gemstone comes in rich ruby reds and in a wealth of other colors that it is often mistaken for other gems. In fact one of the world's most recognized Spinel set in the crown jewels, has for years been mistaken for a Ruby (The Black Prince's Ruby)

Mariners as early as the 11th century used this form of spinel known as lodestone, which literally means 'way stone', to magnetize their compasses and guide their ships at sea. This also saw the beginning of the art of cartography, as seamen began to plot the courses of their voyages and create the earliest maps of the world.

This lovely ring is made by Birks, which traces its origins when Henry Birks opened a small jewelry shop in Montreal, Quebec in 1879. This shop was opened up on Saint James street which was in the heart of Montreal's financial and commercial district and they are still in operation today across Canada.
