After the end of the war, jewellery production began to ramp up again without restrictions and in 1947, De Beers ran the infamous ‘a diamond is forever’ campaign. Almost overnight, diamonds became the engagement ring gemstone with modestly-sized diamonds being presented in white gold illusion settings in order to make them appear larger.
With the advent of new technology in the 1920s an effort began to take shape to create a standardized round cut diamond. The old European diamond began to "transition" to what some call early modern cuts or early American cuts. Transitional cut diamonds are most often seen in jewelry from the 1930s to the 1940s. The modern round brilliant was fully standardized in the early 1950s with 57 facets.
This diamond engagement ring is set with one of those transition cut diamonds. The centre stone measures approximately 3mm round and is estimated to weigh 0.15 cts.
The diamond is expertly set in an illusion setting that makes it appear much larger than it really is. The diamond is set in white gold.
The shoulders of the ring has triangular shields in white gold that add to the elegance and grace of this ring. In each shield is a round single cut diamond. The shank of the ring is yellow gold.
The ring is hallmarked for maker's mark and for gold purity. The ring is stamped 14K - 18K. The use of 2 types of gold is typical of the time period. The 14K is the white gold, and the 18K is the yellow gold shank. The ring is also stamped with the manufacture's trademark. It is stamped BLUEBIRD and a crown inside a C.
The maker's mark is Bluebird which is the Bluebird Diamond Syndicate out of Chicago, IL circa 1934. The second maker's mark is for the Caron Brothers in Montreal Canada. The Bluebird diamond syndicate made jewellery and the second is the local seller.
The trademark of the Bluebird Diamond Syndicate was "the Bluebird of happiness" don't let this Bluebird fly away.
The ring is currently a size 5.25 US and can be sized.
