This lucky find is just the brooch you have been looking for to add interest to your blazer or sweater. This Victorian bar brooch has a lucky horseshoe and is engraved and has wonderful detail with the floral leaves.

The best part of this brooch, it tells it's own story based on the hallmarks. On the back of the brooch it indicates the manufacturer, the Assay office and the date it was tested. All this definitely tells and places this brooch to a location in the world.

From left to right the hallmarks on the back is: AC / Anchor / Lion Rampant / Lower Case Letter a The AC is the manufacturer's hallmark for Alexander Clark, who has been in operation since 1898 in Birmingham. A very similar mark registered at London Assay Office by Alexander Clark, Fenchurch Street, London.

The Anchor is the hallmark for Birmingham The Lion Rampant indicates that the piece is made of silver The lower case a is for the year 1900.

This brooch has a typical of the period "C" clasp closure, and the pin of the brooch does extend slightly past the brooch itself which is also typical of the period. "C" CATCH The earliest catches were simple bends of metal shaped like the letter C The pin was kept within the C with tension created by the pin against the fabric to which it was attached. Almost all C clasps were handmade. A C catch of some type was in use from about 1850 to 1910.
