Opals are rich in lore and symbolism across various cultures, often associated with both good luck and bad. Ancient Greeks believed opals granted the gift of prophecy and protected against illness. Europeans have long considered opals symbols of hope, purity, and truth. Some cultures associate opals with good luck, and they were even considered lucky by some Roman emperors. Lately, opals have received a bad reputation and have become considered unlucky. Opals are often considered bad luck due to a superstition originating from a 19th-century novel, Anne of Geierstein by Sir Walter Scott, where an opal talisman is associated with misfortune and death. While this novel is a primary source of the myth, other factors like the opal's softness and some jewelers' reluctance to work with them have also contributed to this perception. 

This opal is a cabochon cut natural opal. A cabochon cut is a gemstone cutting style where the stone is polished smooth and rounded, rather than faceted. It's characterized by a convex, domed top and a flat or slightly domed underside.

The opal measures 9mm x 7mm and is estimated to be 1.18 cts. The colours of the stone are blues, greens and flashes of an undertone of orange. The flashes of colour are in the brushstroke design as if Mother Nature decided to take up painting and this stone is one of her fine pieces of art.

The ring is set in 18K yellow gold and is very well set with 4 strong prongs.
