Hands have represented a symbol of strength, loyalty and fidelity since Ancient Roman times. In the Georgian and Victorian eras, they were added to jewellery pieces to convey these messages. Often shown in delicate poses, such as holding a flower or clasped together, hands represent friendship in Victorian jewellery.
It was widely believed the king’s hands could heal sickness, and touch would relieve those suffering. Kissing the hands of the Pope, a tradition still in practice today, is said to bring you closer to God. From the 12th Century, it was common for reliquaries to be in the form of limbs, bringing a physicality to the act of worship.
The hand is made out of 800 silver sometimes referred to as Continental Silver as it often comes from the region of Italy or Germany. 800 silver is real silver with a relatively high purity. The number 800 refers to its level of purity, and it means that your silver item is 80% silver and 20% alloy. One of the advantages of 800 silver is that it's more durable than the higher-purity alternatives. This is one reason why there is a lot of 800 silver spoons, knifes, and other flatware.
