This lovely and detailed Victorian ring is set with two rose cut deep red garnets, and a bright red ruby as the centre stone. Legend has it that rubies and other red stones could remedy bleeding as well as increase the body's warmth. That would make sense as this ring is pure FIRE!
In fact, you'll find that the folklore surrounding garnet as well as it has many similarities with ruby symbolism and lore. Before the development of scientific classifications of gem species, many people considered all red gemstones to be the same type of stone.
The centre ruby is prong set and measures 2mm round. The ruby is estimated to weigh 0.05 cts.
The two rose cut are foil backed and have an inner glow and are just stunning. Foiling is when a gem is set in a closed back setting, and as the light enters the gemstone it would bounce off the gold backing or "foil" and bounce back up the viewer. This makes the gem look like it's glowing from within.
Foiled gemstones in jewellery is delicate. The foils placed behind the stones are often fragile and have a tendency to wear over time, as moisture can damage foil and make the stone less brilliant. Please remember that this is an antique ring, and should be worn with care. I don't recommend wearing this ring when doing the dishes and care should be used when around water.
The shoulders of this ring has beautiful engraving and the ring sits next to the finger, and is so comfortable to wear.
The ring is not hallmarked on the inside of the shank but tests as 14K yellow gold. The ring is stamped for manufacture's trademark, it is stamped A (STAR). I have not found any information on the maker of this stunning ring.
