Fede gimmel rings are historic, interlocking engagement rings (16th–17th centuries) featuring two or three bands with clasped hands (fede) that join to form one ring. Symbolizing faith, love, and union, the bands were often separated to be worn by each partner, then united at the wedding, (representing the coming together of two lives). 

Derived from the Italian mani in fede ("hands in faith"), the "fede" component (clasped hands) dates back to Roman times (dextrarum iunctio) and symbolized trust and friendship. Derived from the Latin gemellus ("twin"), gimmel rings feature two or three hoops linked together that fit together to form a single ring. These rings were highly fashionable in Europe (England, Germany) as betrothal rings. The couple would separate the rings to wear during engagement, reuniting them on their wedding day.
