Four Picture Silver Locket / Marathon Locket

$158.00
SKU NEC-26-0004

Photo lockets evolved from ancient amulets and 16th-century containers into sentimental jewelry pieces used to carry miniature portraits, hair, and photographs.

This beautiful locket is designed to hold four (4) oval photos inside of it. The front of the locket has a border of forget-me-not flowers which is a sweet, sentimental motif often found in jewelry.

The locket and the chain are both hallmarked for metal purity and manufacturer's trademark. It is made from the Marathon Company jewelry manufacturer was founded in 1897. It originally began as the Attleboro Manufacturing Company in Attleboro, Massachusetts (a historic hub for American jewelry making), before officially operating under the Marathon name. It remains a well-known, multi-generational family-owned business famous for its fine jewelry, lockets, and children's jewelry lines.

The hallmark for the manufacturer is an M inside a diamond lozenge shape.

During World War I and World War II, photo lockets surged in popularity. Soldiers gifted them to partners and families before heading to the front lines, and post offices in the U.S. even sold them to make shipping keepsakes easier. Photo lockets have been a sweet, sentimental jewelry item since.

The oval locket measures 22mm x 18mm and has a silver bail at the top. The chain is strong and secure and is a rolo chain. A rolo chain (also called a belcher chain) is a type of jewelry chain made from interlocking links that are typically round .

The chain measures 18" in length (aprox 45 cm in length)
