Diamond and Garnet and Glass Doublet Ring / Simulated Emerald
This beautiful ring looks like it is set with rich Emeralds, but in reality it is set with what is known as a Garnet-and-Glass doublet.
The pavilion and most of the crown consists of glass. This glass can have almost any colour - in this case it is green to imitate Emerald. A thin slice of natural garnet, usually red, is fused by heat and pressure to the crown's centre. This is one of the well-done pieces as face up there is no eye-visible demarcation between the glass and the garnet.
Garnet was chosen as it provides durability, high lustre, brilliance, and even natural looking inclusions when viewed under magnification. It is often found in antique pieces as once the stones are placed in a setting, these imitations can pass all but the most thorough examinations.
If you hold this ring up to the light from the side, you might see what is often identified in the industry as the "red ring effect".
But don't get me wrong - this is still a beautiful vintage ring and if you are interested in antique and vintage pieces the way the green stones imitate Emeralds are so interesting. The ring is still a well made vintage ring, as it is set with natural earth mined diamonds.
The ring is hallmarked on the inside of the shank for the gold purity and is marked 14K.
