$52.00
SKU OTH-22-0002

The very first pocket watches, since their creation in the 16th century, up to the early 19th century, had key-wind and key-set movements. A watch key was necessary to wind the watch and to set the time. There were many types of keys from fancy ones to advertising ones and the wealthy sported gold ones. Key sizes varied since they had to fit the different size arbors on the watch. They were usually around an inch or so in length and were attached to the pocket watch chain or chatelaine.

This is just such one of those ornate silver watch keys. The silver key has a head that features a trefoil design. This design has roots that date as early as the 12 century and can also be traced to the heraldic "trefoil" which is stylized as a clover.

The key measures 26mm in length and 9mm in width.

The key is a miniature key and would look wonderful as a pendant.

The key is made out of sterling silver however it is not hallmarked for metal purity. There are hallmarks on the back of the key. One hallmark is a crown with a trefoil as well, and the other is a partial hallmark that is "SA"
