Scottish Clan Brooch / Scottish Clan Brooch / Vincere Vel Mori / To Conquer or Die Motto / Vintage Silver Brooch

This vintage brooch will speak volumes as it has the family motto front and center. The brooch is set with the motto: Vincere Vel Mori "To Conquer or Die" which is the motto of several Scottish clans.

This brooch is solid silver and dates from 1935-1936 and is well hallmarked. The brooch is hallmarked with the Edinburgh Castle which has been used from 1483 to the present. The mark of origin represts and identifies the Assay Office where the silver item was verified.

The brooch is also stamped with what is known as the standard mark. In Scotland the thistle in Edinburgh represents the 925/1000 (sterling) silver fineness. Th brooch also has the makers mark, but it is hard to read as I am only able to read the top of the letters. No informaton has been found on the maker of this brooch.

The front of the brooch featurs an arm in armor holding up a cross. Surrounding the arm is a buckle garter with the motto: Vincere Vel Mori on it.

These hereldic mottos can be from a noble clan as the armor and the buckle garter are often from noble families
