Did you know that Opal is considered the Queen of Gemstones? In Ancient Rome, Opal was so highly praised that it was linked to wealth and prestige.

The Roman word for Opal is Opalus meaning precious stone and Opallios is the Greek word for Opals meaning To see a change of colour. It was so desired that the ancient Greeks even believed that opals were formed from the tears of joy wept by Zeus when he defeated the titans, and that the opal bestowed prophetic powers.

I'm not sure about the tears of Zeus, but they are right Opals are formed by water - rain. Opal is formed when water from rain seeps down into crevasses in the rock. Once the water evaporates, the silica originally from the sand, dries out and hardens into precious opal.

This pendant is made from an opal triplet. Which is a portion of precious opal backed onto a hard back and topped with a cabochon crystal quartz.

The play of color in this pendant is vibrant and lively. You will see a "brush-stroke" pattern in flashes of red, blue, green, yellow and purple.

The pendant is made from natural opals and not synthetic opal. Opal triplets mean that they have enhanced durability to give you a lifetime of wear when cared for. The chain is not silver but silver tone and was just included so you can wear this pendant immediately as you would want to as soon as you see it.

Legend tell of a dazzling gemstone set into the crown of the Holy Roman Emperors, and the Romans eagerly sought to possess any opal as it was considered to bring good fortune.

This opal triplet is oval in shape and measures 8 mm x 10 mm. The fantastic opal is set in sterling silver in a buttercup or belcher setting. The buttercup setting dates back to Victorian times. A variation of the prong setting, its prongs emerge from the mounting as u-shaped scallops. The effect epitomizes the floral fascination of the Victorian era. Jewelry historians also refer to this setting as the Belcher setting.

The chain that comes with it is 18 inches long and is a new chain. As the chain is new, it is strong and the clasp is secure, however you can see that the chain is very shiny compared with the vintage patina of the silver pendant.
