Garnet is one of history's oldest known gemstones, archeologists have recovered garnet necklaces and talismans from Ancient Egyptian tombs and it has been richly desired for millennia.
The word "garnet" comes from the Latin word granatus for seed or grain, most likely a reference to the seeds of the pomegranate fruit. Indeed, some garnets do resemble pomegranate seeds in colour, size, and shape.
Some garnets were said to shine as if they had an internal light. Since ancient times, garnet's traditional red color was associated with the heart and blood. Thus, people believed garnet's mystical purview included the power to counter melancholy, stir the heart to great deeds, prevent blood disorders, and improve circulation.
Garnets had their heyday in Europe when the Bohemian garnet deposits were discovered in 1500. Their enormous production made the gemstone more popular than ever, and Bohemia (in the modern Czech Republic) became a great garnet jewelry center. Traditionally, Bohemian artisans set garnets in rounded clusters, creating lustrous seas of red that resemble pomegranate seeds.
This ring is set set with four (4) deep red almandine garnets. The ring is set in 14k white gold, which provides a nice contrast against the deep red garnets.
The ring is stamped on the inside of the shank. It is marked for metal purity - the ring is stamped 14K. The ring tapers down in width, at the top it is 4mm and at the bottom it is 3mm wide.
The garnets are set securely in an astral setting, that makes the garnets appear that they are the centre of a star. Each garnet measures 2mm round, and is estimated to weigh 0.05 cts each. Total estimated garnet weight is 0.20 cts.
