Illusion set engagement ring / Vintage 1940s Engagement Ring / Two Tone Engagement Ring

At the start of the 1940s, WWII was in full motion, and raw materials were scarce and precious. In the 1940s you will see more gold used in jewelry design, as platinum was no longer available for jewelry as it was used for the war effort.

Diamonds were difficult to come by and most of the diamonds used during the early and mid-1940s were recycled from older jewelry. Despite the scarcity of diamonds, they were in big demand, as the De Beers marketing campaign was so successful that diamonds began to be seen as the only stone for engagement rings.

Often rings were set in an illusion setting as diamonds were so scarce. An illusion setting is a prong setting designed to make a diamond look bigger than it actually is. This is accomplished by a ring of metal surrounding the girdle of the diamond that is often bright cut. This ring diffuses the outline of the stone causing it to look larger.

This vintage engagement ring is set with a center stone of estimated 0.15 cts and set with 2 (two) single cuts. Total diamond weight is estimated at 0.17 cts. All diamonds are natural earth mined diamonds.

The ring is stamped on the inside of the shank for metal purity and the manufacturer's trademark. It is stamped 14K-18K C with a crown (worn) The ring is made with both 14K White Gold and 18K Yellow Gold. This is typical of the period.

The ring is also stamped with the item number of the manufacturer. It is stamped 7936 which would have been the style number of the ring. (Safety Tip! Don't make that your ATM Pin #)

There is also a small design stamped on the inside of the band on the bottom. It looks like a small bow-tie which I have never seen before. It's like the ring is all dressed up and ready for you.
