Antique Albert Chain / Kukui nut Gold Filled Watch Chain / Edwardian Gold Filled Watch Chain

$215.00
SKU OTH-25-0002

The kukui nut holds a significant place in Hawaiian mythology and tradition, its cultural importance has resonated throughout Hawaiian history. The nuts were used for light, timekeeping, medicinal purposes, and as symbols of enlightenment, protection, and peace.

Ancient Hawaiians used strung kukui nuts to create makeshift lighthouses and keep track of time, with each nut burning for about 15 minutes. The oil extracted from kukui nuts was used in lamps, as a source of illumination, and for various other purposes like waterproofing and medicinal preparations. Kukui nut leis are a traditional and treasured form of adornment in Hawaii, often worn by royalty and other important figures to convey respect and wellness.

This watch chain or Albert chain has a vintage kukui nut as a fob that was used for a pocket watch. Albert chains are named after a style of watch chain Prince Albert wore during the Victorian period. Traditionally this style of watch chain has a bar on one end used to affix the chain to a vest buttonhole. The opposite end of the chain is fitted with a swivel hook to attach the watch.

This gold-filled chain measures 12 inches in length and is in excellent condition. The chain is strong and secure with lovely rope details and the swivel dog clip closes and is very secure.

The dog clip is marked "C.A.B. & Co." however I was unfortunately unable to find any information about the manufacturer.
