Art Deco Ring / Synthetic Spinel Birthstone Ring / Solitaire Spinel Ring

Synthetic spinel is produced in vast array of colors, many of which are specifically engineered to simulate expensive gemstones, such as aquamarine, sapphire, and alexandrite or birthstones.  

It can be made using methods like flame fusion (Verneuil process), which is a cost-effective method for producing large quantities.

This synthetic gemstone is set in an a stunning Art Deco setting that it took my breath away when I saw it. 

The gem measures 5mm round and is estimated to weigh 0.35 cts. The colour is a rich bluish purple. When I look down at the stone with its rich colour, you can't help but recall how purple was once only associated with Royalty.

Rulers across the ancient world, including the kings of Persia and Alexander the Great, adopted purple as a symbol of their status. In Ancient Rome, its use became a matter of law (sumptuary laws), strictly regulated by social status.

The ring is made out of 10K yellow gold. It has been stamped for the metal purity and the manufacturer's trademark on the inside of the shank. The ring is stamped 10K E J. The manufacturer is most likely E. J. Towle Mfg Company which was in operation from 1945-1980. Around 1895 Joseph Mayer and his two younger brothers, Marcus and Albert, emigrated from Germany to the Seattle Washington area. There they established a wholesale and manufacturing business. Albert and Marcus set up a jewelry business in Dawson in the middle of the Klondike gold rush.
