Stunning Platinum Art Deco Engagement Ring / Natural Diamond Engagement Ring / French Cut Diamonds
Art Deco jewelry is known for its clean lines, bold geometric shapes, and symmetry. This stunning ring is a true Antique Art Deco ring set with all of the original stones.
What I love about this ring most of all are Antique Old European Cut diamond as the centre stone, and the "French" cut diamonds that run along the side.
The French cut diamond originated in the 1400s and was a natural progression of the table cut diamond. French cut diamonds became fashionable in the 17th century and were favored by royalty and nobility. They were also used to decorate clothing during the Baroque period. French cut diamonds are known for their cross-shaped crown facet and square or rectangular outline. They have 18–24 facets, which is fewer than the 57–76 facets of a modern princess cut diamond. French cut diamonds regained popularity during the Art Deco period of the 1920s and 1930s.
Old European cut diamonds were cut by hand using candlelight, so each one is unique and slightly different. As you might guess, these diamonds are cut in a style developed in Europe and popular from 1890 to 1930.
All the diamonds are natural earth mined diamonds and are original to the ring. They are set in platinum and still very secure in their mountings.
Platinum was also popular in the 1920s and 30s, especially during the Art Deco period. It became the preferred metal for engagement and wedding rings because it does not alter the perceived color of diamonds and it is much stronger than silver. In North America, during World War I and II, platinum was deemed a strategic metal used for rifle and engine parts, explosives and the making of armaments. It was forbidden in jewellery and yellow gold then became a popular alternative.
All the details of this ring help definitively date this ring to the early 1930s.
The ring has partial hallmarks on the inside of the shank. It is marked "PL" that helps identify that it is made of platinum.
