Ruby and Diamond Ring Circa 1893 / Gold Hallmarked Natural Diamond and Natural Ruby Ring
The year 1893 was a time of both significant progress and profound challenges. The World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago (better known as the Chicago World Fair) showcased technological advancements, the trials and tribulations of the infamous Lizzie Borden saw her acquitted of murder, however Sir Arthur Conan Doyle did kill off Sherlock Holmes in a story.
But another wonderful thing happened in 1893 - the birth of this stunning ring. The ring with its clear hallmarks are able to tell a bit of its history. On the inside of the shank is marked W&FR / Crown / 18 / Anchor / Letter T.
The W&FR indicate that the manufacturer is W & F Rabone (Walter Hayes Rabone & Frank Rabone). They operated a business on Frederick Street, Birmingham & Albion Street, Birmingham. Their partnership dissolved 2 Apr 1918.
The Crown and the 18 indicates that the ring is made out of gold and it is assayed as 18K Yellow Gold. The Anchor indicates that the piece was assayed in Birmingham, England and the date letter T shows that the piece was assed in the year 1893.
The ring is made out of a luscious rich buttery yellow gold and is set with two (2) natural rubies on the shoulders, and an Old European Cut Natural diamond at the top. An old European cut diamond is a round diamond primarily cut between 1890-1930. They were especially common during the Art Deco period. These antique diamonds were one of the predecessors to the modern round brilliant cut diamond, which is now the most popular diamond shape.
The ring tapers down the finger. The top of the ring measures 6mm wide and it tapers down so that at the bottom of the shank it measures 3mm.
