WWII (1942) Dated Wedding Band / Vintage Wedding Band / Gold Wedding Ring / War Bride Wedding Ring
World War II had a significant impact on marriage, with many couples marrying during and after the war. The term "war bride" refers to women who married Canadian or American servicemen during World War II and later immigrated to join their husbands. An estimated 48,000 women married Canadian servicemen, mostly from Britain, but also from other European countries.
This ring tells such a story. The hallmarks on the inside of the shank shows that the ring was made in Chester, UK (close to the England-Wales border) and that it was manufactured in 1942 during WWII.
I can only dream of the love story that sparked this marriage and how this ring founds it's way over to North America. I would suspect that it was lovingly worn by a war bride who after the war came over to North America to start a new future.
The ring is beautifully hallmarked on the inside of the shank. You will find the coat of arms for Chester which depicts three (3) sheafs of wheat with a sword pointing up. The next hallmark is 9 .375 which indicates that the ring is 9K gold. This is the hallmark showing that karat of gold prior to 1975. 9K gold is typical of jewellery pieces from the UK. Finally the date letter is an "R". Given the style of the type font you can look up the date letter and discover that this piece was manufactured and assayed (gold tested) in Chester as 9K in 1942.
The ring is still perfectly round which is remarkable for a ring of its age and vintage.
